Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, offers many preventive measures and precautions to protect oneself from COVID-19. ( May 2023 )

For any communicable disease, treatment is possible once we know the disease and how it is transmitted. Only then can we prevent or treat the disease.

COVID-19 causes great harm in daily life, affects the masses, disturbs the psyche, and weakens people's immunity.

COVID-19 is a disease caused by SARS COV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2).

Its transmission through droplet infection from human to human. COVID-19 is spreading uncontrollably and threatening the lives of many people worldwide.

In January 2020, WHO (World Health Organization) declared the novel coronavirus an international health emergency.

WHO (World Health Organization) classified COVID-19 as a global pandemic on March 11, 2020.

Clinical symptoms of COVID-19 generally include fever, a dry cough, and shortness of breath.

Other signs include a sore throat, myalgia, headache, fatigue, diarrhoea, etc.

Few patients show mild symptoms, and some of them show upper respiratory tract infection with bilateral lung spots in the lungs on CT scan, decreased WBC, altered liver function, and increased CRP.

Few patients show severe symptoms such as pneumonia, dermatologic manifestations, and elevated proinflammatory cytokines, which are the main pathologic findings in ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome or respiratory failure).

Children have a milder clinical presentation than adults.

Mortality is higher in patient with lifestyle diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, chronic lung disease, stroke, gastrointestinal disease, and cancer. Death occurs at COVID-19 due to respiratory failure, septic shock, and multi-organ failure.

Do you think social distance, the N95 mask, regular hand washing, and the COVID vaccine prevent the spread of coronavirus?

Before we understand the answer, let's know what the basis of further explanations is. Yes, it’s Ayurveda.

Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine originating in India. It dates back over 5,000 years and is one of the oldest medical systems in the world. Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of a healthy mind, body, and soul for overall well-being. It believes in treating the individual as a whole rather than just the disease alone.

Let us look at every year in the months of March and April. COVID returns in mutated form. What is the reason for this?

In the spring months of March and April, our system is flooded with natural mucus melted by the strong sunlight of the season, and naturally, our body shows some signs in the form of allergies, sneezing, runny nose, high fever, cold, and cough.

Our body's immune system is indicating that it needs support to get rid of and eliminate the natural kapha, or phlegm. We have little appetite, are lethargic, and have a weak immune system.

The body itself detoxifies the system, and we should support our system in gently detoxifying.

If we ignore our body's natural signals and practice the wrong dietary and lifestyle habits, then this accumulated kapha becomes a breeding ground for microbes and viruses to multiply at 10 times the normal rate and cause the system to spiral out of control.

So before it is too late or our system is lost its homeostasis we follows some primary protocols that should be followed regularly every year starting in the spring:

Biological cleansing of the upper respiratory tract through detoxification to eliminate toxins from the body this can be achieved through Panchakarma, which is a set of therapeutic treatments for detoxification. Nasyam and Vaman Panchkarma are the choices of treatment done under the strict guidance and supervision of an authentic Ayurvedic doctor.

Boost your immunity. Ayurveda emphasises the importance of building strong immunity to prevent disease. Incorporate immune-boosting herbs and spices, such as ginger, turmeric, black pepper, and cinnamon, into your daily diet routine. Drink herbal tea with these ingredients to further enhance your immune system.

Eat a balanced diet. We stress the importance of eating a well-balanced diet. Consume foods that are light, easy to digest, and rich in nutrients, such as khichari and moong daal. Avoid processed, packaged, and fried foods

Practice regular breathing exercises: Pranayama, or yoga, which can improve lung capacity and reduce stress and anxiety.

Get adequate sleep. Sleep is an essential factor in maintaining good health. Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night to recharge your body and boost your immunity.

Unmanaged stress can weaken the immune system and make individuals more susceptible to diseases. Practice meditation and other stress-relieving activities to minimize stress and anxiety.

Cleanliness is an important aspect of preventing the transmission of microbes. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, disinfect frequently touched surfaces, wear a mask, and practice social distancing to minimize exposure to the virus.
