Obesity

Obesity is an increase in fat tissue or medo dhatu leading to flabbiness of the belly, buttocks, and breasts. Central or Visceral obesity is when the fat accumulates in the mesentery and around the viscera. The fat accumulates in the trunk & the abdominal cavity is at a much higher risk for several other diseases. So we can say central obesity is more harmful than diffuse obesity (fat accumulation in subcutaneous tissue). Obesity usually is resulted when caloric intake exceeds the utilization by the body. Acharya Charak has described stholya as Ashta Nindita.

Causes : Overeating, over nourishment (santarpan), (Adhyshan) consumption of food before the previous meal digested, eating sweets in excess, heavy, cold, unctuous food, overeating meat, milk, sugarcane, jaggery, rice, wheat, and black gram. Eating freshly harvested grains and drinking water after having a meal can also cause obesity.

A Sedentary lifestyle, day sleeping, lack of sexual activity, and sleeping after meals also contribute to slow metabolism and cause obesity.
Psychologically unhappiness, stress, and lack of sleep will also contribute to obesity. Hereditary, overnutrition during pregnancy, underlying lifestyle diseases like hypothyroidism, and slow metabolism worsen obesity.
All the cause factors increase kapha pradhan tridosha, rasa, and medo dhatu vitiation and are treated by ayurvedic detox, medication, and change in diet and lifestyle.
Symptoms-
BMI above 25 or up to 29 is overweight and above 30 is obesity. The BMI also depends on body type or prakrity hence the core calculation of obesity is not only based only on BMI. For example, a Kapha individual has a naturally broad frame with full energy and will naturally have a higher BMI but is not under the stholya category. A vata Prakriti has a lean body frame naturally if he gains weight his lower BMI reflects stholya.
Obesity is a further risk factor for some serious health problems like Heart disease, Diabetes, osteoarthritis, issues with the digestive system, sleep apnea, depression, shame and guilt, social isolation, and cancers. Obesity is usually cured by therapies and medicines that balance kapha and vata factors in the body. Appropriate changes in diet and lifestyle modification further help the person sustain weight loss and reverse the adverse effect of obesity.
